How to Play Sudoku: A Beginner's Guide to Rules and Strategy
June 21, 2026
Sudoku is a logic-based number placement puzzle. Despite using numbers, no math is required! All you need is logic, deduction, and a calm state of mind.
The Basic Rules of Sudoku
A standard classic Sudoku puzzle consists of a 9x9 grid, which is further divided into nine 3x3 sub-grids (or “blocks”). The goal is to fill the entire board following three simple rules:
- Every Row: Must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
- Every Column: Must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
- Every 3x3 Block: Must contain the numbers 1 through 9 exactly once.
Beginner Strategies
If you are just starting out, don’t guess. Sudoku is about certainty. Here are two techniques to get you moving:
1. Crosshatching
Pick a number (let’s say 5) and scan the rows and columns to see where it cannot go in a specific 3x3 block. Often, you will find there is only one valid empty cell left for that number.
2. Counting
If a row already has eight numbers filled in, simply count from 1 to 9 to find the missing digit. This applies to columns and blocks as well.
Why Play Sudoku?
Beyond being a fun puzzle, Sudoku is a fantastic way to train your focus. In a world full of noise and distractions, sitting down with a beautifully designed, tactile grid can be a daily sanctuary.
